When to make an appointment with an elbow specialist:​

  • Your elbow pain persists for several weeks

  • Home treatment for pain is no longer effective

  • You find it difficult to perform simple daily tasks

  • The range of motion in your arm has decreased

  • Dull or achy pain occurs while using your arm

  • Pain occurs even when you’re not using your arm

  • You have difficulty sleeping because of the pain

  • You experience numbness or tingling in your arm

  • Pain or weakness gets worse over time

When to seek immediate care: 

​

  • A traumatic injury results in a noticeable deformity of your elbow joint

  • A traumatic injury results in a protruding bone

  • Intense pain occurs after an injury or fall

  • Bruising and swelling occurs, especially when accompanied by a fever

  • You are unable to move your elbow

Common causes of elbow pain:

 

  • Fractures, dislocations, and subluxations

  • Sprains and strains

  • Tendonitis

  • Tendon tears

  • Autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and lupus

  • Osteoarthritis​

  • Bursitis
